Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a four-alarm fire in Downtown Dallas on Friday evening, with a fourth alarm being called at 8:14 p.m.
The initial report came in at 6:05 p.m. about a fire at 1717 San Jacinto Street, affecting the secondary chapel of First Baptist Dallas, according to DFR. Viewer videos showed thick black smoke rising near the church.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames. A second alarm was requested at 6:20 p.m., and operations quickly escalated to a defensive approach as the fire continued to spread. By 7:30 p.m., the structure suffered a partial collapse.
DFR reported that the fire has been largely contained, though significant damage remains, with many hot spots still present. Firefighters are expected to remain on site to extinguish these lingering areas and ensure safety around the unstable building.
Pastor Dr. Robert Jeffress issued a statement, asking for prayers and thanking God for protection. He confirmed that there were no reported injuries and encouraged the community to stay hopeful and united in faith.
Ben Lovvorn, the Executive Pastor, assured that the fire was contained to the historic sanctuary. He emphasized that the church’s strength lies in its people, not just its buildings, and affirmed that First Baptist Dallas will continue to stand strong and reunite for worship soon.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries have been reported. DFR will continue to monitor the situation and maintain a secure perimeter around the site.
