Congressman Collin Allred, D-Dallas, recently announced that the Texas Department of Transportation has secured a $26.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This funding will support the replacement of transit vehicles and the completion of bus facility projects across various regions in Texas.
More than 30 regional transportation districts and rural areas throughout Texas are expected to benefit from improved transit access thanks to this grant. The funding aims to address critical infrastructure needs in Texas’ Rural Transit Districts (RTDs), enhancing transportation services for local communities.
Congressman Allred advocated for the grant, highlighting the necessity of transportation investments in Texas, particularly in rapidly growing rural communities. He emphasized the impact of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in delivering resources across the state. The grant will enable Texas to modernize and upgrade rural bus fleets, enhancing transportation capabilities and fostering economic connectivity.
Given that Texas has the highest rural population in the United States, RTDs play a crucial role in providing essential links to employment, healthcare, education, and other vital services, especially for low-income households. The grant will support the acquisition of state-of-the-art, emission-free buses manufactured in the United States, further contributing to sustainable transportation solutions in Texas.
