HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — In times of crisis, Houstonians always come together to support one another. On Wednesday, nearly 2,000 people received food and water at the Bayland and Radack Community Centers in Precinct 4.
“I cried yesterday. It’s not just us; it’s people with babies, the elderly—it hurts. Even though I don’t know them, it hurts because people are struggling,” said Mayra Rodriguez, who came with her husband and young daughter.
For many, Wednesday marked the third day without power, and some have also been without water. Xiomara Ventura, caring for 23 people in her home, said, “We have family from church and relatives at home, and we are managing as best we can.”
Ventura walked to the distribution center, using a cane for support, as the gas station near her home was closed. “We are going through rough times, but thank God there is hope,” she said. “Hope comes from God and from these people serving us, bringing food in this hot weather.”
Workers face the same struggles as those they help, yet share in the hope as well. “I love giving to the people and coming together,” said Maritza Sepulveda, who distributed food and registered those in line. “I’ll definitely get some rest tonight, but I’ll leave with a full heart, ready to come back tomorrow.”
Calvin Bratton brought his grandson, Nicholas, and together they waited patiently in line. “As I went through, I thanked everyone I saw. I appreciate it. It means a lot,” Bratton said. “It’s important for him to see good people helping others. He needs to learn to share what he has.”
The Bayland and Radack Community Centers will reopen on Thursday and Friday at 11 a.m.
