HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — On Tuesday, SkyEye provided a closer view of the damage to NRG Stadium’s roof following Hurricane Beryl’s impact on Houston the previous day.
Two sections of the stadium’s roof are visibly damaged, with half of one roof panel missing and parts of another affected after the Category 1 hurricane passed through.
Many Texans fans recall the significant roof damage caused by Hurricane Ike in 2008, which led to the postponement of a September game against the Baltimore Ravens. Despite the setback, the Texans managed to play the remainder of their 2008 season games as scheduled.
Harris County, the owner of NRG Stadium, is aware of the roof damage. Ryan M. Walsh, CEO and executive director of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation, released a statement acknowledging the situation:
“Like many in our Gulf Coast community, NRG Park sustained damage from Hurricane Beryl, including to the roof at NRG Stadium. HCSCC officials are working closely with state, county, and city officials on recovery efforts across the region. As we assist with these efforts, we are also assessing the extent of damages to NRG Park facilities.”
The Texans are scheduled to commence their training camp with the first practice on July 18. Their first home preseason game is slated for August 17 at NRG Stadium.
According to Meteorologist Elyse Smith, the damage to NRG Stadium was not solely due to peak wind speeds but also the sustained duration of strong winds associated with hurricanes. Smith noted that Beryl’s winds reached 84 mph at Hobby Airport.
