Brent Hagenbuch holds a lead in campaign funding and has secured major endorsements, including from former President Trump. While the lawsuit remains unresolved, Hagenbuch has been permitted to continue his campaign for the seat. As the May 28 runoff election approaches, both candidates have intensified their criticisms of each other. Early voting is set to commence on May 20.
In the March primary, Hagenbuch garnered 36.4% of the vote, while Yarbrough secured 33.9% in a four-candidate race. Given the district’s Republican-leaning composition, the victor of the runoff is poised to secure the seat in November.
Both candidates share similar policy priorities, with a strong emphasis on border security funding, stricter immigration policies, and support for initiatives such as allowing families to use public school funds for private tuition and homeschooling. Hagenbuch, a Navy veteran and owner of a Denton-based trucking company, emphasizes his experience and business acumen as reasons for voters to support him. Conversely, Yarbrough, a lawyer and Air Force Reserves member, emphasizes his fidelity to conservative values and pledges to be an independent voice in Austin.
The residency lawsuit filed against Hagenbuch by Yarbrough and others has been a focal point of contention. While Hagenbuch maintains his eligibility, Yarbrough continues to challenge it, alleging residency discrepancies.
