The FBI is seeking assistance in locating a Houston woman accused of posing as a nurse and defrauding elderly individuals of millions of dollars. Regina Thomas, along with her son, Isaiah Thomas, faces numerous wire fraud charges. While Isaiah has appeared in federal court and is currently out on bond, Regina remains at large. The FBI’s Houston office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to her apprehension.
Assistant Special Agent in Charge Heath Janke emphasized the seriousness of the case, highlighting that it marks the first time a reward has been offered in Houston for an elder fraud case. Federal prosecutors allege that the Thomas duo conspired to scam an older couple out of over $1 million in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Regina purportedly posed as a nurse and provided care for the couple’s elderly mother, earning their trust. Subsequently, she allegedly deceived the couple into believing they were facing arrest for FEMA fraud and presented Isaiah as a lawyer who could assist them.
Prosecutors claim that the couple wired funds to the Thomases under the guise of paying for legal services, totaling more than 60 transactions. The investigation suggests that Regina used false identities and professions to exploit senior citizens for financial gain.
While federal authorities are pursuing additional charges and investigating other potential victims, their primary objective is locating Regina. Despite efforts to reach her, Isaiah maintains that he has had no contact with his mother for over a year and a half and is unable to assist in locating her.
Individuals with information on Regina Thomas, also known as Nikki Laday, are urged to contact the Houston FBI.
