Michelle Williams, the president of the Houston Education Association, has been relieved of her teaching duties at a Houston ISD elementary school.
Williams, a vocal critic of HISD superintendent Mike Miles and his policies, particularly on social media, faces the risk of losing her job due to a live-streamed post that allegedly violates the district’s policies.
A “letter of concern” from HISD’s West Division Superintendent Laura Stout accuses Williams of posting on social media during the workday from her classroom, a violation of district policy.
In the post, Williams criticized HISD’s recently released compensation manual for teachers, calling it “a slap in the face to all teachers in HISD.”
Williams, who streamed the video from a set designed to resemble her classroom at Shadowbriar Elementary School, has retained legal representation and declined to comment further on the matter.
While the district did not confirm Williams’ employment status, a memo revealed her reassignment to a bus depot as of March 7, citing her failure to meet the district’s expectations regarding high-quality instruction.
HISD’s board will vote on the proposed termination of Williams’ contract, giving her the option to contest the decision.
