In preparation for hosting seven matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Houston aims to provide world-class facilities, particularly in terms of the playing surface, which is paramount to FIFA’s standards, according to Janis Burke, CEO of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority.
However, Houston faced a challenge due to the scheduling conflict with the annual Rodeo at NRG Stadium, where the World Cup matches will take place. The stadium’s floor typically hosts a different surface for the Rodeo, causing delays in the installation of the required grass months before the World Cup.
FIFA suggested moving the Rodeo to accommodate the World Cup requirements, but this was deemed impractical given the Rodeo’s significance to the city.
To address this issue, Dan Bergstrom, known as “The Sodfather,” who serves as the Director of Turf and Grounds for the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash, played a crucial role. Bergstrom’s expertise and dedication to maintaining top-quality fields helped Houston secure FIFA’s approval despite the challenges posed by the Rodeo scheduling.
Bergstrom’s meticulous planning and commitment to excellence were evident during Houston’s World Cup bid presentation, where he demonstrated the city’s capability to provide a playing surface of exceptional quality, even under time constraints.
Ultimately, Houston’s success in navigating this obstacle underscored its suitability as a host city for major sporting events, showcasing its determination to overcome challenges and deliver outstanding facilities for athletes and fans alike.
