In Houston, Texas, surveillance videos are providing insight into the events leading up to the shooting of a suspected robber by Houston Police on Thursday evening.
obtained footage capturing the moment when Houston police engaged with the robbery suspect, who was riding an electric scooter. In the video, an unmarked police car can be seen traveling along a bike path parallel to the suspect. Both vehicles eventually reached Eastwood Avenue, where a confrontation occurred, and weapons were drawn. However, due to the lack of audio, the sequence of gunshots is unclear.
The suspect collapsed moments later, with his scooter beside him. Prior to the confrontation, surveillance footage shows the same individual, wearing a grey hoodie, a mask, and camo pants, entering Magnolia’s Ice Cream shop. Off-camera, he allegedly committed a robbery before calmly leaving on his scooter.
Police suspect the same individual robbed an insurance office on the 8600 block of Harrisburg just minutes before the encounter.
Marlene Garza, the owner of the ice cream shop, described the suspect as unusually polite during the robbery, leaving the staff puzzled about his intentions.
Houston police believe the suspect may be linked to at least five or six robberies in the past month, each time utilizing a scooter. However, specific details about these incidents have not been disclosed by HPD as of Friday afternoon.
The officer involved in the shooting, a 30-year veteran of the department, has been placed on standard leave pending an investigation. HPD typically releases body-worn camera footage within 30 days of an officer-involved shooting.
As of now, the identity of the suspect has not been released.
