The son of the Lakewood Church shooter underwent the removal of a breathing ventilator on Friday, marking a significant step in his recovery from a gunshot wound to the head sustained over the past two weeks, as stated by the boy’s family.
According to a Facebook post by Walli Carranza on Thursday, her grandson underwent two surgeries within 24 hours, during which half of his right skull had to be removed.
Despite undergoing two major surgeries, three additional surgical interventions, various lab tests, imaging procedures, and specialized care from seven specialists, the boy remains in critical condition in the neuro ICU at Texas Children’s Hospital, Carranza noted.
Prior investigations uncovered that the 7-year-old boy, whose identity is being withheld for privacy reasons, had reportedly experienced trauma and abuse long before the incident at the Lakewood Church service on Feb. 11.
Carranza, the boy’s paternal grandmother, expressed her concern, stating, “She put my grandson in harm’s way for seven years.”
As the child continues his recovery, authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding why his mother, Genesse Moreno, brought him and her AR-15 into the church on the aforementioned date. The question of whether he was shot by his mother or by officers during the encounter remains unanswered.
