Sickle cell anemia affects approximately one in every 365 Black or African-American births, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control. While advancements in comprehensive care and treatment have been notable, sickle cell remains a highly painful and potentially fatal condition.
Dr. Tomia Austin serves as the executive director of the As One Foundation, established in response to the passing of Devaughn Darling. Devaughn and his twin brother, Devard, relocated to Houston from the Bahamas at a young age and excelled as athletes, notably playing football for Florida State University.
Tragically, Devaughn succumbed to complications related to sickle cell trait during off-season mat drills on February 26, 2001, due to factors like dehydration and physical overexertion, as noted on the As One Foundation’s website.
In the wake of this loss, Devard established the foundation to raise awareness about sickle cell within the community.
The annual Darling Dash, featuring 10K, 5K, and 1K races, is organized to raise funds in support of the foundation’s mission and initiatives. This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday.
