The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has announced that a 36-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend’s friend in 2022.
Brittani Simmons, aged 23, lost her life on June 29, 2022, in north Harris County. The tragic incident occurred while she was having dinner with Lioneicia Malveaux. Kentrell O’Brien Brumfield, Malveaux’s ex-partner, unlawfully entered Simmons’ apartment and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Simmons and Malveaux.
Brumfield, who had relocated from Farmerville, Louisiana, to Houston, was previously charged in June 2022 for robbing and assaulting Malveaux. Less than a month after this incident, Brumfield forced his way into Simmons’ apartment where the fatal shooting took place.
Following the shooting, Brumfield fled and was apprehended in Mississippi after a pursuit by law enforcement.
After a four-day trial, a jury deliberated for only 16 minutes before convicting Brumfield. He has since been sentenced to life in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Lara Hogue emphasized the senselessness of the crime, stressing that neither victim deserved such a fate. She described Brittani Simmons as an innocent neighbor who was tragically caught in the violence.
Hogue also highlighted Brumfield’s history as a repeat offender, citing previous convictions for domestic violence and home invasion in Louisiana.
