In Houston, Texas, are you familiar with what the law requires when an emergency vehicle approaches you with lights and sirens activated?
Houston police aim to ensure drivers are aware of the proper protocol.
When questioned about responses to police chases, the Houston Police Department declined to comment on specific pursuits. However, officers outlined the appropriate actions drivers should take when encountering any emergency vehicle approaching from behind.
Senior Officer Bullock emphasized the necessity of yielding to the emergency vehicle by pulling over to the right, coming to a complete stop, and allowing the vehicle to pass unimpeded.
He underscored the importance of ensuring safety when changing lanes, especially on highways, where drivers should slow down sufficiently before pulling over.
Officer Bullock cautioned against tailgating emergency vehicles after they have passed, highlighting the uncertainty of their next maneuvers.
In congested intersections, drivers should cautiously proceed as instructed by emergency personnel, possibly making a right turn when safe to do so.
Officer Bullock also reminded drivers of the Move Over or Slow Down Law, applicable not only to emergency vehicles but also to Texas Department of Transportation vehicles, tow trucks, and utility service vehicles. When these vehicles are stopped on the roadside with lights flashing, drivers must reduce their speed by 20 mph below the posted limit or change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if possible.
