In north Houston, a tragic house fire claimed the lives of a mother and her infant on Saturday morning, as confirmed by officials.
The Houston Fire Department responded to the fire at a residence on Heaney Street near Tidwell and Bauman Road.
According to authorities, the woman managed to rescue two of her children before re-entering the burning home in an attempt to save her 1-year-old, but unfortunately, she did not make it out.
The surviving children, both under 10 years old, are now under the care of relatives.
A relative informed that the mother was overwhelmed by the smoke and flames during her rescue attempt.
Neighbors reported hearing children crying for help in Spanish through a mail slot just before 5 a.m. A neighbor recounted seeing the children, without shoes, seeking help in the rain as the house across the street was engulfed in flames.
The extent of damage to the home made it difficult to determine if it was a one-story or two-story structure.
The fire department emphasized the importance of staying out of a home once evacuated, although they acknowledged the desperate circumstances the mother faced.
Firefighters continue their investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
