In Houston, Texas (KTRK), if you’re unfamiliar with the 2024 RodeoHouston artist Major Lazer, don’t expect a lone military officer to take the stage for a DJ set on the star-shaped platform.
Instead, Major Lazer, a trio known for their high energy, vibrant vibes, and promotion of peace, is bringing their Jamaican dancehall-inspired electronic music to NRG Stadium on Friday, March 8.
Comprised of acclaimed producers Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Ape Drums, a proud native of Houston, Major Lazer is a certified-platinum group.
Eyewitness News caught up with Ape Drums ahead of the group’s performance, discussing his fond memories of growing up with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, his favorite rodeo food, and the importance of blending country and non-country genres for his hometown event. He also touched on what non-Major Lazer rodeo attendees can anticipate and why they might enjoy their music, as well as potential collaborations with other artists from the 2024 rodeo lineup.
Ape Drums highlighted the significance of the performance for Houstonians, emphasizing their efforts to showcase appreciation for Houston culture by playing music familiar to locals.
“We’re going to try our best to show our appreciation for Houston culture. We’re going to play music that Houstonians definitely will know,” said Ape Drums.
