To celebrate the Detroit Lions’ advancement to the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, a pizza establishment in North Texas is offering a deal that may not appeal to football fans and pizza enthusiasts.
Motor City Pizza in Lewisville is running a special promotion of ‘Buy One, Get 10 Free’ on its “The Detroit Lions Pizza,” humorously dubbed “The absolute worst” on the menu.
Described on the restaurant’s website as “One of very few pizzas to never even reach the BIG game. Matter of fact, unless you are a die-hard, lifelong Detroiter, we suggest you avoid this one.”
However, the price tag on this pizza is likely to catch customers off guard. The Detroit Lions Pizza comes with a hefty price of $5,555.55! The silver lining is that customers will have ample time to recover from the sticker shock while contemplating their purchase.
Greg Tierney, the owner of the small, family-owned business, is a native of Detroit and a lifelong Lions fan. He shared that the pizza is a playful jab at the Detroit Lions’ lackluster performance over the past seven decades.
Tierney remarked, “As a Lion fan my entire life, I have seen so many disappointments and collapses that it had become comical.”
He added, “The ongoing saying amongst us fans is ‘SOL,’ which stands for ‘Same Ol’ Lions,’ and I am thrilled that I may have to change this menu item.”
Despite the Detroit Lions’ near miss at their first Super Bowl, losing to the San Francisco 49ers after initially leading 24-7 in the first half of the NFC Championship, Motor City Pizza hasn’t sold any of these pizzas since its inception in October 2020.
Given the exorbitant price, Tierney isn’t expecting a significant number of Detroit Lions Pizzas to fly off the shelves.
Looking ahead, the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will clash in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, February 11, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, marking a rematch of Super Bowl LIV in 2020.
