According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, union membership saw an increase of 139,000 individuals last year, with Texas contributing nearly 60,000 of those new memberships.
Hany Khalil, Executive Director of Gulf Coast AFL-CIO, highlighted that organizing efforts, worker activism, and public support for unions have reached unprecedented levels. He emphasized that workers in the Texas Gulf Coast and nationwide are uniting to advocate for each other and demand dignity and respect in the workplace.
Khalil expressed optimism about the growing participation of young workers in unions, despite prevailing beliefs that unions pose challenges for small businesses and diminish competitiveness in the marketplace.
He noted that even amidst aggressive corporate union-busting tactics, the labor movement remains resolute in its mission to ensure that every worker who desires union representation has a fair opportunity to join one.
