HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Your umbrella may become your constant companion over the next several days. A messy cold front rolling in Thursday night will bring days of constant clouds and rain chances to Southeast Texas.
Before a cold front arrives, temperatures will climb back into the warm 80s Thursday afternoon. Rain chances will remain slim through the early afternoon, but they’ll ramp up as we head into the evening because of the approaching cold front. The flood potential is low but ponding cannot be ruled out with the heaviest rain. Most will pick up an inch or less with this opening round of rain Thursday night, but there will be isolated pockets of 2 and 3 inch totals.
On Friday, temperatures are expect to slowly fall through the day from the mid 60s near sunrise to the mid 50s in the afternoon with showers continuing under an overcast sky.
Are we expecting flooding or severe weather in this pattern?
Severe weather looks unlikely at this time, but any heavy rain that pops up Thursday night could bring some isolated pockets of street flooding. By sunrise Friday, the heavy rain should be mostly offshore with steady light to moderate rain showers continuing off and on behind the front.
How does the weather look for the weekend?
Veterans Day weekend will likely be wet, windy, and chilly with temperatures stuck in the 50s all day Saturday. We now have a 60% chance of showers on Saturday and a 40% chance on Sunday. With the odds tilting toward drier weather on Sunday, we expect temperatures to warm back into the 60s under an overcast sky.
How many inches of rain could we get?
Now through Tuesday we could pick up rain totals averaging 1-2″ north of I-10 and 2-4″ south of I-10. The rain will likely be heavier in our coastal counties due to the front stalling just offshore. Deeper moisture will be present near the front leading to heavier rain and higher accumulations.
So how long could clouds block out the sun?
The sky will start to cloud over on Thursday, and then it is likely to stay overcast Friday through at least Monday and possibly until next Wednesday.
