Early voting begins Tuesday for the June 10 runoff elections featuring a race for a seat on the Dallas City Council.
The early voting period runs through June 6. Sixteen locations will be open in Dallas County, including nine in Dallas, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. next Monday and Tuesday.
The number of locations will expand to around 60 sites on Election Day, which are scheduled to be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Among the races that still need to be decided in June is who will represent southwest Dallas’ District 3 on the Dallas City Council. Radio talk show host Joe Tave and pastor Zarin Gracey emerged as the top two vote getters to succeed term-limited incumbent council member Casey Thomas, but neither gained more than 50% of ballots cast to win the seat outright in the May 6 election.
The District 3 contest is the only Dallas City Council race voters didn’t decide in May, when they reelected the mayor and all eligible incumbents, and elected a new representative to an open seat for northeast Dallas’ District 10.
Also on the June 10 ballot for some voters is the race for the District 2 seat on the Dallas ISD board between longtime education volunteer Sarah Weinberg and small business owner Jimmy Tran. Both emerged as the leading candidates in a three-person race to succeed incumbent board trustee Dustin Marshall, who announced in February that he wouldn’t seek re-election.
In May, Tran received about 40% of the vote and Weinberg got 37%.
Dallas County voter turnout was low in the May 6 election. Officials said 8.8% of eligible voters cast ballots, which ranks lower than the past two municipal elections in 2019 and 2021 and well short of recent county projections of 10%. Voter turnout was in the 9% range in 2019 and 2021.
