HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — You might need to pad in some extra time for your morning drive Thursday. Widespread showers and even a few thunderstorms will pass through during the morning commute. While there could be some pockets of briefly heavy rain, most of the rainfall will be manageable with accumulations less than half an inch. Isolated neighborhoods could pick up a quick inch, and that could lead to some ponding on roadways and minor street flooding.
Temperatures will hover in the upper 30s and low 40s as the freeze line stays far away from us. While there is no threat of icy weather in Southeast Texas, freezing rain and sleet will continue to plague central and northern Texas through Thursday morning.
How long will the cold weather continue?
We will stay cold and rainy through Thursday, with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s most of the time. Friday will be dry, but could only reach the 50s in the afternoon. The weekend is looking warmer with highs in the 60s to around 70.
When will the sunshine return?
Clouds will linger into Friday morning but should break up by the afternoon. We are seeing evidence today that the clouds could hold on a little longer and might not completely clear out until Saturday. The weekend still looks beautiful with a mostly sunny sky.
Are we done with freezes?
Not yet! In fact it will be very near freezing if not below freezing across a large part of Southeast Texas on Saturday morning. With the wet ground, a heavy frost is possible, so you’ll want to protect cold sensitive plants. After Saturday morning it may be a long time before we get another freeze, if any, this winter.
