HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Thursday brought us a record-tying high of 97, and we’ll be near records again through the weekend.
Temperatures Friday morning will start off in the mid 70s. Sunshine and a dry southwest wind will work together to push highs into the upper 90s during the afternoon. We are now predicting a high of 99 for Friday, just shy of the record 100 set in 1902. Despite the near record heat, the humidity will be low enough to only push the heat index up to about 105. It takes a heat index of 108 to trigger a Heat Advisory. You’ll still want to stay well-hydrated and take plenty of breaks if you will be working or playing outside.
Over the weekend it will get even hotter, and it is very likely Bush Airport’s thermometer will register 100 degrees for the first time in over 650 days.
How long will the triple digit days stick around?
At this time we are predicting it to hit 99 on Friday and 100 on Saturday and Sunday. If we do hit 100 on Friday, it will tie for the second-earliest date on record to first reach 100 degrees in Houston.
When is our next chance for rain?
The next chance comes on Wednesday when we get a southeasterly flow in the lower half of the atmosphere to pump in some Gulf moisture. But even then it’s only a 20% chance you’ll get rain at this time. Keep those lawn sprinklers going!
Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?
We are tracking another large Saharan dust cloud moving into the Gulf of Mexico that could reach us as early as Sunday. No tropical activity is expected this week because of the dry, dusty air, but the Bay of Campeche could end up active again by the end of next week. You can stay informed on everything happening in the tropics all season long with our daily tropical update.
