HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Scattered strong thunderstorms are possible Thursday afternoon when a weak front rolls into Houston.
Thursday morning will start mostly dry with temperatures in the low 70s. A weak front will reach College Station around noon and steadily push toward Houston during peak heating hours. That means scattered thunderstorms will pop up in and around Houston between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Some of the storms could produce a quick inch or two of rain along with frequent lightning strikes and wind gusts over 40 mph.
As this front is moving in from the north, the sea breeze front will be pushing in from the Gulf of Mexico. These two fronts are likely to merge somewhere south of I-10 late in the day, increasing the chances for heavy thunderstorms where that happens.
The thunderstorms should settle down after sunset.
Are there any other chances for rain this week?
Yes! The weak front will stick around through Friday, and we have your rain chance at 30%. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible again Saturday before a heat ridge squashes the rain chance for most of next week.
Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?
We are keeping an eye on the remnants of Agatha near the Yucatan peninsula. Its moisture is moving toward Florida and could develop into a tropical depression or storm before it moves over the Sunshine State Friday. All of its rain will stay away from Texas, but it could bring widespread tropical rains to South Florida and the Bahamas. You can learn more about it in our daily tropical update.
