At the 97th Academy Awards, Sean Baker’s dramatic comedy “Anora” was the big winner of the night, taking home five awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for star Mikey Madison.
Hosted for the first time by Conan O’Brien, the Oscars ceremony concluded an award season overshadowed by January’s Los Angeles wildfires. The show began with a special package of film clips paying tribute to the city and ended with “We Love LA.” A chill-inducing performance by “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo followed.
Heading into Sunday’s ceremony, Netflix’s musical/crime drama hybrid “Emilia Pérez” led with 13 nominations. “Wicked” and “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor and architect, followed with 10 nods each.
“The Brutalist” ended the night with three awards, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody. “Wicked” earned two wins, including Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
