HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — As communities across Houston and its surroundings grapple with the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, some families are mourning tragic losses caused by the storm.
Beryl’s destructive path resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals. Four fatalities occurred in Harris County alone. Among them was an HPD employee who tragically drowned while en route to work.
In other instances within Harris County, deaths were attributed to fallen trees. One occurred in Atascocita, where a tree collapsed onto a one-story home, claiming the life of a man. Another fatality took place in Ponderosa Forest near IH-45 and FM 1960, where 73-year-old Maria Loredo lost her life after a tree fell on her home.
A fourth death occurred in the 2600 block of North Main Street, where a 77-year-old man drove onto a bridge over White Oak Bayou during high water. The vehicle was swept against a wall by the bayou’s current and submerged.
In neighboring Montgomery County, three additional fatalities occurred during the storm. In one tragic incident, a man and a woman sleeping inside a tent behind a Dollar General store were killed when a large tree fell on them.
Another victim in Montgomery County was a man operating a tractor to clear debris when another tree fell on him, resulting in his death.
These incidents underscore the devastating impact of Hurricane Beryl, reminding residents of the importance of caution and preparedness during severe weather events.
