In a shocking turn of events, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has labeled the recent ceasefire as a “political catastrophe.” According to foreign news agencies, Lapid stated that this level of destruction has never been seen in history. He also claimed that Israel was not even at the negotiation table when decisions were made about its national security, adding that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s policies have been a failure both politically and strategically.
Lapid further stated that Bennett failed to achieve any of his set goals, and it will take years to rectify the damage he caused. This comes as US President Donald Trump has accepted Pakistan’s two-week ceasefire request made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Trump also announced that Iran and the US will soon engage in direct talks, although it’s possible that Iran may not participate due to security concerns.
Global oil prices have seen a decline in recent days, with a 21% drop in the price of UEA crude oil in the London international market. An Iranian official stated that Iran may be able to restrict access to the Strait of Hormuz for a limited period by controlling the territory on Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Chief of Army General Aviv Kohavi announced that Israel will continue to attack Hezbollah’s strongholds in Lebanon without any ceasefire. The two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran has been hailed as a positive development globally, with Austria’s leadership praising Pakistan’s role in facilitating this breakthrough.
Reports in French newspapers have highlighted Pakistan’s crucial role in brokering the ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran. Some of these reports have mentioned the special efforts made by Field Marshal Asim Munir, Lt Gen Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah.
Notable leaders, including European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, have issued separate statements welcoming this development. Chairman of the Kashmir Council, Ali Raza Syed, praised Pakistan’s role, stating that it’s a significant and positive step forward.
The UAE has reported that its air defense system has destroyed 17 ballistic missiles, while Iran’s drones have been shot down by the UAE’s air defense system. According to reports, 35 drones were fired by Iran. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi emphasized that the implementation of this agreement is essential, and any potential threats or sabotage must be avoided.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the ceasefire, also expressing his readiness for a ceasefire with Russia. As of now, there has been a significant decrease in shipping and movement in the Strait of Hormuz since the ceasefire announcement.
Finally, Islamabad’s district administration has announced a holiday from April 9-10 to celebrate the ceasefire.
