The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is at risk of facing significant economic and military consequences if it joins the ongoing conflict in the region, according to renowned American economist Jeffrey Sachs. In an interview with the Indian media outlet ANI, Sachs warned that Dubai and Abu Dhabi, primarily tourist and commercial hubs, are not equipped to withstand the brunt of war, citing their lack of robust defense systems and missile protection.
Sachs expressed concerns that if the UAE were to join the war effort, it would compromise its economic model and global investment prospects, putting the country at risk of significant economic losses. Reports have also emerged that a Boeing E-3 Sentry (AWACS) aircraft, used for air surveillance, missile tracking, and drone monitoring, was also affected.
The American economist stressed that the UAE has taken a high-risk approach by forging close alliances with the United States and Israel, putting itself in a precarious situation. Sachs also criticized the Abraham Accords, stating that Middle Eastern countries have become overly reliant on American protection, which could prove to be a flawed strategy.
Citing a quote from former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Sachs noted that American enmity can be dangerous, but its friendship can sometimes be deadly. On the other hand, Iran has warned regional countries against allowing their territories to be used for American military operations, with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif cautioning that such actions would be considered an act of aggression.
In related news, the UAE and other Gulf countries have expressed support for the US and Israel in the wake of Iranian attacks on energy infrastructure, further escalating tensions in the region. A $10 billion support package has been approved for the business sector, according to reports.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the new Iranian leadership, saying that they have been more reasonable than their predecessors. However, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has emphasized that Iran must stop producing missiles, drones, and supporting terrorist groups.
In a separate development, the Lebanese government has asked Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Reza Shibani to leave the country, citing his negative influence. European Council President Antonio Costa has expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to resolve the Middle East conflict.
According to Iranian state media, over 230 children have been killed and more than 1,800 injured in US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has appealed to US President Trump to end the conflict in the Middle East.
