Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has directed the expansion of the digital account’s scope, allowing foreign citizens, companies, and institutional investors to invest in the digital account. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, foreign nationals will be permitted to invest in government securities, including the new Pakistan Certificate, in addition to being allowed to invest in the digital account. The statement further noted that the State Bank of Pakistan expects remittances to reach $42 billion by 2026, up from $38.3 billion in 2025.
Pakistan has emerged as the fifth-largest remittances-receiving country in the world and second-largest in South Asia, according to the State Bank of Pakistan. The bank’s foreign exchange reserves stand at approximately $16.3 billion, while its total reserves are around $21.6 billion. As of February 2026, over 900,000 digital accounts have been opened, with a total investment of over $12 billion in the digital account. The Prime Minister has congratulated the Finance Minister, Senator Aon Abbas Bappi, the State Bank, and participating banks on their success in expanding the digital account’s scope.
The Prime Minister stated that the expansion of the digital account’s scope would make Pakistan more attractive for investment, leading to an increase in financial transactions and economic growth. The Finance Minister noted that Pakistan is ready for investment, and the expansion of the digital account would provide a transparent, secure, and favorable environment for investors worldwide to take advantage of the available opportunities.
In other news, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived at the Prime Minister’s House for a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Minister briefed the Prime Minister on the proposed fuel support program for motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to take a video clip of the speech of PTI founder Imran Khan’s son, Qasim Khan, in which he demanded the restoration of the GSP Plus status.
