Breast cancer is a formidable foe, but early detection is key to a successful treatment. Typically, breast cancer is diagnosed in the early stages when the tumor is still confined to the breast or has spread to nearby lymph nodes. The early stages of breast cancer include Stage Zero, Stage One, and sometimes Stage Two. If detected early, the treatment outcomes are relatively better.
According to experts, the five-year survival rate for Stage One breast cancer is approximately 90 percent, whereas it significantly drops in Stage Four. Common symptoms of breast cancer include lumps or thickening in the breast or underarm area, changes in breast size or shape, dimpling or puckering of the skin, and unusual discharge or redness.
In Karachi, the global incidence of breast cancer is staggering, with 35,000 new cases reported annually. Experts warn that not every lump is cancerous, but any unusual change warrants a prompt medical examination. Factors that increase the risk of breast cancer include advanced age, family history, genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, hormonal factors, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Mammography is considered the most effective method for detecting breast cancer in time. Research suggests that screening can reduce mortality rates by approximately 20 percent. Ultrasound and biopsy are also crucial diagnostic tools. The American Cancer Society recommends regular screening for women over 40.
Treatment for early-stage breast cancer depends on the type of cancer and may include surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy), radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy. Early detection not only makes treatment more effective but also reduces the need for harsher treatment.
