Pakistan’s all-rounder Salman Ali Agha has expressed his disappointment over the controversial run-out in the second One-Day International (ODI) match against Bangladesh in Mirpur. Agha stated that, in that moment, he chose to showcase sportsman spirit.
During the match at the Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz had given Agha out for a run-out on the non-striker’s end. Agha, visibly upset, had stormed out of the field after the incident. In the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings, Bangladesh’s captain had bowled a relatively fast delivery, which was played back to the bowler by Mohammad Rizwan. The ball, which was spinning, then went towards Agha, who was standing on the non-striker’s end.
As Agha walked back to the pavilion, he was visibly agitated, and Bangladesh’s wicket-keeper Liton Das also looked displeased. Agha had initially tried to get out of the way of the ball, but it seemed to have ricocheted off Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s right foot, and Agha, in an attempt to return the ball to the bowler, had bent down. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz had picked up the ball and hit the wicket, resulting in Agha’s run-out.
In a press conference after the match, Agha stated that, according to the laws of the game, his run-out was correct, but he felt that, in that moment, he should have shown more sportsman spirit. Agha added that, in hindsight, he might have made a different decision if he were in a similar situation.
On the other hand, Bangladesh’s captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz defended his decision and stated that, if he had failed to hit the wicket, Agha could have tried to score a run off an over throw.
The controversy surrounding the run-out has sparked a debate in the cricketing community, with many labeling it as a display of poor sportsmanship. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has also taken notice of the incident and has issued a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct, imposing a one demerit point on Agha.
