US President Donald Trump has declined to comment on the formal nomination of Ebrahim Raisi as Iran’s new supreme leader, instead opting for a brief reaction, stating that they will “see what happens”. According to Israeli media reports, Trump stated that any decision to end the war will be made in agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He claimed to have spoken with Netanyahu, saying that they will make the decision at the right time.
The 56-year-old Ebrahim Raisi has been nominated as Iran’s new supreme leader by the 88-member Assembly of Experts. The religious institution has confirmed that Raisi was appointed and introduced as Iran’s third leader on the basis of the decisive vote of the assembly’s esteemed representatives. Following the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, the situation in Iran and the Middle East has become increasingly tense.
Despite being briefed on the nomination, Trump refused to comment in detail on the appointment, although he had previously publicly labeled Raisi as a weak and unacceptable candidate. Prior to the official announcement, Trump had expressed a desire to play a role in the succession process. According to Israeli media reports, the 88-member Assembly of Experts has agreed on Raisi’s nomination. In a conversation with the media, Trump stated that Iran should consider the US opinion on the new supreme leader, adding that if the US does not approve, the new leader will not last long.
Despite warnings and ongoing tensions, the Assembly of Experts has remained committed to its stance, refusing to reconsider its decision despite ongoing American and Israeli aggression. The US has launched attacks on Iranian targets, including an American Tomahawk cruise missile that struck an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps naval base near a school. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the aim of the attacks was to destroy Iran’s missile program.
In the 9-day conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, reports from various countries indicate that over 1,255 people have been killed and over 12,000 wounded in Iran as a result of US and Israeli attacks.
