The United States and Israel have launched a series of airstrikes against Iran, leading to a sharp escalation in tensions in the region. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of six American soldiers, and Iran has vowed to retaliate. In an interview with NewsNation, US President Donald Trump hinted that a US ground troop deployment may not be necessary, a departure from his previous stance.
Trump stated that the US has the capability to use additional military force and that operations could last for more than four to five weeks. The US President also revealed the US military targets, which include Iran’s missile systems, naval power, and nuclear program, as well as efforts to disrupt the country’s support for militant groups.
However, Trump clarified that regime change in Iran is not a goal of the US military operation. Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev criticized Trump’s decision to launch a military strike on Iran, calling it a “grave mistake.”
Iran has responded to the airstrikes by launching missile and drone attacks in the Middle East and threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments. The Iranian government has also accused the US and Israel of launching an unlawful war against the country.
The conflict has disrupted international air travel, with several countries closing their airspace. Turkish authorities reported that a missile fragment fell in the coastal town of Marmaris without causing any casualties.
In a separate development, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that none of Iran’s nuclear facilities were damaged in the airstrikes. Iranian state media reported that a ceremony to mourn the death of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, would be delayed due to administrative issues.
Meanwhile, US President Trump expressed his indifference to Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup, saying, “I don’t really care if Iran plays in the World Cup in 2026.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the Israeli military to prepare for a potential war with Iran. Spanish Prime Minister said that the war “would not be a justifiable cause for the international community” and would not bring any benefits to Israel.
The conflict has raised concerns about the safety of international shipping routes, with Iran threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz. The US and its allies have responded by increasing their military presence in the region.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides escalating their rhetoric and actions. As the conflict continues, the international community is bracing for the potential consequences of a prolonged and escalating conflict.
