Pakistani social media users have exposed Sky News for spreading false news about Pakistan, prompting a strong reaction from users and a retraction from the channel. According to reports, Sky News had claimed on its social media platform X that the Afghan Air Force had launched an attack on Pakistan, but after Pakistani users pointed out the inaccuracies and facts, the channel was forced to delete the post.
Federal Minister for Information, Attaullah Tarar, also issued a statement saying that the Afghan Taliban regime had resorted to spreading fake news on social media after Pakistan’s coordinated and effective operation, following which the international channel deleted the fake news. The statement also mentioned that the Air Force and Army operations, the killing of 133 Afghan operatives, and the wounding of over 200 people had left 16 Afghan checkpoints completely destroyed, and 9 Afghan posts had been overrun, with the Pakistani flag raised.
Thousands of users pointed out that there was no regular, active air force in Afghanistan at the time, making the claim an anomaly. Social media also saw the emergence of the view that Sky News had been criticized in the past for spreading negative narratives about Pakistan and its armed forces, with its anchor, Yelda Hakim, also facing allegations of spreading anti-Pakistani narratives.
