Bollywood actress Rani Rau, known for her roles in Indian-Canadian films, has been named in a charge sheet filed by the Indian Enforcement Directorate (ED) for allegedly smuggling gold into India. According to investigations, the network, which Rani Rau was allegedly a part of, smuggled more than 127 kilograms of gold into the country over the past year, selling it in the domestic market through handlers and jewelers.
The charge sheet, filed in the Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Bengaluru, names Rani Rau, along with her alleged associates Taran and Sathish, a businessman from Belari. The actress has been accused of earning a commission of Rs 4-5 lakh per kilogram for smuggling gold from Dubai to Bengaluru.
Rani Rau, 33, who is the stepdaughter of a senior police officer, was arrested last year at Bengaluru airport for attempting to smuggle 14.2 kilograms of gold. The gold was found hidden in her clothes and some was even worn by her. The authorities suspected her of suspicious behavior, as it was her fourth trip to Dubai in 15 days. After her arrest, the police raided her house and found gold jewelry worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash.
Rani Rau is currently in Bengaluru Central Jail. The actress’s father, Manibhat, said that she had always been a bit of a rebel and that it was no surprise that she was involved in such activities.
