Punjab’s Local Government System is set to undergo a significant overhaul, with new proposals granting unprecedented powers to local bodies. According to sources, the new system will empower town councils, municipal corporations, and tehsil councils to collect taxes, fees, and fines, giving them greater financial autonomy. The proposed system will also transfer significant administrative powers to local bodies, including the management of civic amenities, master plans, land use, and zoning.
Under the new system, local governments will be responsible for providing basic services, registration, and addressing public grievances, with the caveat that they will not be given additional responsibilities without adequate resources. The proposed system is expected to reduce the power struggle and administrative vacuum, making it easier to address public issues.
