The government of Pakistan has announced significant changes to the security and verification system of the National Identity Card (NIC). The federal government has officially upgraded the NIC and Pakistan Origin Card system under the “One Nation, One Identity” vision, establishing a unified and digitally secure identification framework in the country. A formal notification has been issued, which outlines the modernization of the security features of the identification card.
According to the notification, the National Identification System has been updated with a QR code-based verification, improved biometric features, robust anti-fraud measures, and enhanced citizen services. The new rules have granted official legal status to fingerprints and iris scans, which will strengthen the biometric verification system of citizens. Under the new rules, whenever an identification card is suspended, all related verification and attestation services will automatically be closed, making it impossible to use the suspended card on any digital or institutional platform.
The authorities claim that this move will significantly reduce the likelihood of fake identities and deception. Under the reforms, citizens will receive a uniform identification card, effectively ending the parallel system of chip and non-chip cards.
