Stargardt disease is a hereditary disorder caused by a defect in the ABCA4 gene, resulting in the accumulation of toxic substances in the eye, which gradually affects central vision while peripheral vision remains relatively unaffected. Early symptoms of the disease include a persistent haze or yellowish shadows in front of the eyes, delayed vision in bright light, and blurring of colors.

Experts warn that these symptoms are often overlooked as mere fatigue or general vision problems, which can be life-threatening. Medical professionals state that there is no complete cure for Stargardt disease yet, but research on gene therapy is ongoing.
