The Supreme Court of Pakistan has commuted the death sentence of 76-year-old Muhammad Mumtaz to life imprisonment in the case of a double murder that took place 76 years ago. The court took into account the accused’s poor health and stated that the murders were not part of a pre-planned conspiracy, but rather a bloody confrontation that began over a trivial dispute between the accused and the family of the deceased over a cow. The court also noted that there was no documentary evidence to support the claim that the accused had committed the murders in a fit of rage over a cattle theft case.
The case dates back to March 2015, when two women were killed and one person was injured in a firing incident in the Dera Sodhi Mera area of Sargodha. The trial court had sentenced the accused to death in 2019, and the Lahore High Court had upheld the sentence in November 2024.
