The Punjab government has finalized a new ordinance to curb child marriage, which will be presented in the next assembly session. According to the ordinance, the Nikah Registrar will face a one-year imprisonment and a fine of one million rupees for registering a child marriage. On the other hand, an individual above 18 years of age who marries a minor will face a minimum of two years in prison. The punishment for violating the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2013, has been increased to two years and a fine of one million rupees. Additionally, an adult involved in child marriage will face a fine of up to five million rupees. The ordinance has also declared cohabiting with a minor girl after marriage as child abuse, and those found guilty will face a sentence of five to seven years in prison and a fine of at least ten million rupees. Under the ordinance, taking minors out of Punjab for marriage will be considered child trafficking, and parents or guardians who force their children into early marriage will face a sentence of two to three years in prison.
All child marriage cases will be tried in the sessions court, and the court will have the authority to issue a stay order to prevent child marriage. The ordinance has also declared all crimes related to child marriage as non-bailable and non-compoundable offenses. Minister of State for Interior, Tahir Chaudhary, said that Pakistan is a responsible state and has always strived to maintain good relations with its neighbors. However, the export of terrorism from Afghanistan to Pakistan has been going on for a long time.
