In a significant development, the Islamabad district and sessions courts have agreed to postpone the arrest warrants for Shandana Gulzar, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The courts made this decision after receiving a request from Gulzar’s lawyers to withdraw the warrants. The request was made due to the intervention of the Islamabad High Court, which had previously restrained the police from arresting Gulzar in two separate cases registered against her under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
During a court hearing, Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majooka was present, and the lawyers for Gulzar submitted that they had approached the Islamabad High Court to get the cases dismissed. The Islamabad High Court had indeed stayed the arrest warrants, paving the way for the lawyers to withdraw the request for bail.
Gulzar, who is a member of the National Assembly from Peshawar, had filed a complaint against the SHO of the Budh Ber police station, alleging that he was being subjected to a “fake FIR” and was being threatened with death. Her lawyers argued that the police had been using draconian laws to silence her.
Reacting to the development, senior Sindh minister Sharjeel Memon said that some people were politicizing every situation and spreading despair. He added that the government’s claims of improving the economy were baseless.
