The Supreme Court of Pakistan has upheld the life imprisonment sentence of a man who brutally murdered his wife and injured their two children. In a written verdict, the court emphasized the importance of protecting women’s rights and dignity in society. The bench, comprising Justice Hashim Khan Kakar, Justice Salahuddin Panhwar, and Justice Ashiat Ibrahimi, observed that women are equal members of society who deserve protection, respect, and dignity.
However, the court also highlighted the issue of domestic violence in the country, stating that women are subjected to brutal treatment and abuse on a regular basis. The court attributed the increase in such cases to the growing addiction to narcotics, which has become a major contributor to the breakdown of family relationships.
The court emphasized that the state has a constitutional obligation to protect women’s rights under Articles 9 and 25 of the Constitution, which guarantee the right to life and liberty, and equality. In this case, the accused, Saamiullah, was found guilty of murdering his wife and injuring their children. He had a history of addiction to narcotics and had a history of domestic violence against his wife.
The court also took note of the fact that the accused had fled the scene after the incident, failed to attend his wife’s funeral, and did not inform the police about the incident. These actions were seen as evidence of his guilt and a reflection of his lack of remorse.
The trial court had initially sentenced the accused to death, which was later commuted to life imprisonment by the Islamabad High Court. The Supreme Court’s verdict upholds the life imprisonment sentence and reiterates the importance of protecting women’s rights and dignity in society.
