Rupsha South Union in Chanchal Upazila of Bangladesh’s Chandpur district marked a historic milestone as women cast their votes for the first time in 56 years. On the occasion of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections and the Constitutional Referendum, a large number of women visited polling stations, marking a significant development in the region’s political and social history. According to the Election Commission of Bangladesh, Shafiqur Rahman secured 85,131 votes, while local residents claimed that in 1969, women were instructed not to cast their votes, resulting in the women of the union not participating in elections for decades, despite repeated encouragement from the Election Commission and local authorities.
On Thursday morning, as voting began, a large number of women were seen at polling stations across the union, who enthusiastically cast their votes. A 70-year-old woman expressed joy at casting her first-ever vote in her lifetime.
