In a significant development, Israel has announced that the Rafah Crossing, situated between Gaza and Egypt, will reopen on a limited and experimental basis on Sundays, allowing only pedestrian traffic. The primary objective of this move is to facilitate the transfer of severely ill and wounded Palestinians to Egypt for medical treatment.
According to reports from Arab media, the Israeli military authorities, under the direction of Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), have initiated the reopening of the Rafah Crossing as a part of a limited “pilot phase” under the supervision of Egypt and the European Union.
Although both sides will have access to the crossing, only pedestrian travel will be permitted. Notably, the Rafah Crossing is the only border crossing that connects Gaza to Egypt, and it has been closed since the Israeli military seized control of it in May 2024.
In a related development, the Gaza authorities estimate that around 22,000 severely ill and wounded Palestinians require immediate transfer abroad for medical treatment, while over 80,000 Palestinians who fled Gaza during the conflict are waiting to return.

Egyptian officials reported that at least 50 patients were transferred to Egypt on Sunday.
