Karachi, Pakistan – In a press conference held outside the Water Corporation office, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced the impending release of the investigative report into the Glorious Plaza tragedy. The rescue operation for the tragic incident has been completed, and the FIR has been registered.
“We are committed to providing the investigation report to the public by tomorrow,” Mayor Murtaza Wahab said, adding that they share the pain of those affected by the tragic incident. “We will learn from this tragedy and take necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”
The Mayor also revealed that the Water Corporation had taken steps to address the issues, including the recent visit to Hab Rezervier, where he witnessed the cleaning of 15 MGD tanks after 40 years. He also stated that the employees who were receiving double salaries have been identified, and 73 employees, including 7 MCs, have been caught receiving salaries from both the Water Corporation and the MC.
Murtaza Wahab also said that 20 employees are receiving double pensions, and the situation is being monitored through the system. “We have taken steps to address the issue of double employment, which has caused a loss of crores of rupees in the past,” he said.
The Mayor emphasized that the Water Corporation had implemented the SAP system to prevent corruption and irregularities. “In the past, there was no SAP system in place, but the PPP-led government introduced it to curb irregularities,” he said.
Regarding the recent flooding, Mayor Murtaza Wahab said that the water level in Hab Dam has been controlled, and a new canal has been constructed. “We have also taken steps to repair the old canal and increase the water supply from the federal government,” he said.
The Mayor also announced plans to restore the LSAR pumping station, which would increase the water supply by 4-4.5 MGD.
Meanwhile, the Chief of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lieutenant General (R) Nazeer Ahmed said that Karachi has the potential to settle all of Pakistan’s debts. The federal health ministry has issued a warning and advisory regarding the spread of the deadly Nipah virus from India.
