For those seeking to catch a North Texas team in action during March Madness, Texas Woman’s University (TWU) stands as the lone option.
The TWU basketball squad has achieved a series of historic milestones, including their first Sweet 16, Elite 8, and Final 4 appearances. Now, they’re set to compete for the NCAA Division II Women’s National Championship.
“There’s a lot of excitement in the air,” remarked Amy Evans, TWU’s Director of Communications for Student Life. “You can really feel the support behind this team!”
To rally fans, TWU is organizing a trip to St. Joseph, Missouri, where the game will take place—a journey spanning 8 hours by bus.
“Our initial fan bus for students filled up so quickly that we’ve arranged for 2 fan buses,” Evans explained. “Sign-ups are ongoing, and I anticipate they’ll fill up fast as well.”
TWU senior Lucero Anaya eagerly signed up for the bus excursion.
“It’s thrilling to witness women’s sports receive this level of recognition,” Anaya expressed. “It’s a historic moment for us!”
Evans noted the record-breaking attendance at TWU basketball games this season and emphasized the community’s desire to partake in this momentous event.
“Our basketball team has drawn unprecedented crowds this year, and everyone wants to be part of this historic occasion. We’re offering them the chance to be there,” Evans stated.
At the campus bookstore, shelves are stocked with new shirts and hats for fans to display their TWU pride.
“This is not only Women’s History Month but also the 50th anniversary of Title IX in the NCAA, and here we have a Texas-based university with a focus on women achieving such remarkable success,” Evans remarked. “It’s truly remarkable when you consider all these factors.”
“Yeah, I have faith they’ll come out on top,” Anaya added confidently.
For those unable to attend the game in person, TWU is organizing a watch party on campus. The tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
