Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes revealed in a Monday news conference that three officers were engaged in a “gun battle” with a burglary suspect last week before the individual ultimately turned the gun on himself. Noakes described the incident as highly dangerous and dynamic, with approximately 37 shots fired—27 by the officers and 10 by the suspect.
The confrontation unfolded after officers responded to a burglar alarm call at a business on North Beach Street around 9 p.m. last Tuesday. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Shane Miller, was initially detained but later fled. During the pursuit, Miller fired multiple shots at the officers. Though a Taser was deployed, it proved ineffective.
The exchange of gunfire continued at various intervals as officers pursued Miller on foot through a parking lot, between businesses, and under an overpass. Real-time crime center footage showed Miller tripping on a storm drain, falling while still armed, and subsequently shooting himself in the head. Despite immediate aid from officers, Miller was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The investigation revealed that Miller had an active warrant for a parole violation related to a drug charge. Noakes commended his officers for their response in a dangerous situation, emphasizing their vigilance in protecting themselves and the community. The incident is under investigation by the department’s major case and internal affairs units, with findings to be forwarded to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office for review.
