HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A powerful weather system over the Plains is pushing another cold front toward Houston, and our confidence is growing that an arctic front will bring a big freeze to Southeast Texas for Christmas weekend.
A weather disturbance will bring clouds and showers Sunday night and Monday and keep temperatures chilly Monday. Temperatures will stay cool through Wednesday. Then, we have a blast of arctic air and freezing temperatures before Christmas.
How cool and wet will the weather be tonight and Monday?
Temperatures may stay in the 40s most of tonight and Monday. Showers will be most likely during the daytime Monday with some places seeing around an inch of rain.
When is the next chance for rain?
Overnight Sunday through Monday night. There might be a light shower near sunrise Tuesday before it ends.
When will the arctic front get here?
The front will arrive on Thursday, December 22nd.
Are we expecting a hard freeze or any frozen precipitation with the arctic front?
A hard freeze (temperatures below 24 degrees for more than two hours) is likely in most of the area Friday morning and Saturday mornings. For Christmas Day, we are calling for it to be among the top 3 coldest Christmas mornings in Houston’s recorded history. If you have plans to leave town for the holiday, you might consider winterizing your home by shutting off your water and draining your pipes before you leave just in case we do end up with a hard, pipe-bursting freeze.
