HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It’s such a lovely spring we’re having here in December. High temperatures in Houston topped record levels Tuesday afternoon, with the warmest reading of 85 occurring at Hobby Airport.
A heat ridge parked over the Gulf of Mexico will keep our highs and lows running about 20 degrees above average for most of this week, and more record highs will be challenged..
Overnight the sky will cloud back over with patches of fog, some dense, coming in from the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures will again run well above average with lows only in the upper 60s. For perspective, the average high for this time of year is 67 and the average low is 47.
Temperatures will soar back into the low 80s where the sun pokes out Wednesday afternoon. The record high to beat in Houston is 84 degrees set in 1998.
How long will the warm air and sea fog stick around?
For the rest of the week. A weak cool front will try to push into Southeast Texas Saturday night. Sea fog will also persist until we get drier air to blow in behind a front. The density of the sea fog will depend on how strong the winds blow.
How will the front impact our weekend weather?
Ahead of the front it should be warm and humid again on Saturday. The frontal timing is still uncertain, but it will likely hold off until Saturday night. Scattered thunderstorms are possible ahead of the front Saturday afternoon and evening. Some showers could linger into Sunday morning. Temperatures behind this front will only drop lows toward the low 60s and highs into the 70s.
When could we get a stronger cold front?
We are seeing signs that next week’s weather pattern could support the arrival of a stronger cold front around Wednesday, December 14th. This cold front has the potential to drop highs into the 50s and 60s with lows in the 30s and 40s.
