Two judges from the Iranian Supreme Court were shot dead in Tehran on Saturday, and another judge was wounded, according to Iran’s judiciary’s Mizan news website.
The attacker killed himself after opening fire at the judges outside the Supreme Court. Iranian media reported that a bodyguard of one of the judges was also wounded.
The motive for the assassination is unclear. The judiciary identified the slain judges as Mohammad Moghiseh and Ali Razini, who were involved in cases related to “national security crimes, espionage, and terrorism.”
The assailant was reportedly not involved in any cases before the Supreme Court. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Razini, 71, held several key positions within Iran’s judiciary and had previously been targeted in a 1998 assassination attempt.
Although attacks on judges are rare, Iran has witnessed several high-profile shootings in recent years.
