Impeached President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, attended a court hearing on Saturday to challenge investigators’ request to extend his detention on charges of insurrection.
Yoon became the first sitting president in South Korea to be arrested on Wednesday, following a criminal probe into his brief declaration of martial law on December 3.
On Friday, investigators requested a detention warrant to extend Yoon’s custody by up to 20 days. He has refused to cooperate with investigators and has been held in Seoul Detention Centre since his arrest.
Supporters of Yoon gathered outside the court, but police broke up the crowd. Yoon’s lawyer stated that the president attended the hearing to defend the legitimacy of the emergency martial law and to argue that insurrection charges are unfounded.
