LEAs planning to conduct operations in Lower Kurram.
Proposed sites for camps to house displaced individuals in the region.
Announcement follows a terrorist ambush on a supply convoy.
A day after a terrorist ambush targeted a supply convoy in Kurram district, the local administration has announced the establishment of temporary camps for displaced individuals (TDPs) in Lower Kurram, as law enforcement agencies (LEAs) prepare for a counter-terrorism operation.
According to a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner Kurram’s office on Friday, LEAs are planning operations in various parts of Lower Kurram.
“To ensure the safety and support of the affected population during the anticipated operation, the following sites are proposed for establishing camps for the displaced individuals of District Kurram,” the notification read.
The proposed sites include the Government Boys Degree College, Tal; Government Technical College; Rescue 1122 compound; and a judicial building currently under construction.
Kurram has experienced decades of violence, with around 150 fatalities reported in renewed clashes that began last November when two separate convoys under police escort were ambushed, leaving 40 dead.
The Thursday ambush targeted a 35-vehicle convoy carrying rice, flour, cooking oil, and essential medicines for local traders, killing at least eight individuals, including security personnel, drivers, and civilians.
Retaliatory action by security forces resulted in the deaths of six assailants.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and tribal leaders have brokered multiple truces between conflicting groups, but violence persists.
The latest peace deal was announced on January 1, yet an aid convoy to the area was attacked just days later, injuring several officials and their security escorts.
Only two aid consignments have been dispatched to Kurram in the past two weeks, with the latest reaching the region on January 14.
Residents have complained that the aid provided is “insufficient,” while helicopter services for transferring patients from Kurram have been suspended for the past 10 days.
